Distracted driving continues to be a problem in Florida
We have all been hearing about the dangers of distracted driving for years now. While distracted drivers have always been a factor in many car accidents, the technology that is part of our world today has only increased the ways that drivers can become distracted.
By now, we know we should avoid technological devices like our phones while driving. However, recent data unfortunately showed that in 2021, Florida had its highest number of distracted driving deaths in the past 8 years.
This statistic demonstrates that despite all of our knowledge about the dangers of distracted driving, many of us still continue to engage in it when on Florida’s busy roadways.
Tips for staying off your phone when driving
Our phones continue to be one of the biggest contributors to distracted driving. We know that we should not use our phones or look at them while we are driving, but knowing it and doing it are two different things.
If you are a driver who finds it hard to put your phone away when driving, try putting your phone on silent mode while you drive, or even better, physically putting it somewhere else, such as your back seat or glove compartment.
Remember that any messages will still be there whenever you are safely parked at your destination. If you are in an emergency situation and truly need to respond to a message right away, pull over and respond.
Help for victims of distracted driving
You can control your own actions, but you cannot control other drivers on the road. In many distracted driving accidents, only one of the drivers was distracted.
This leaves the other accident victim struggling to deal with the aftermath of a car accident that they were not responsible for. Major injuries, lost time from work, destroyed vehicles and emotional stress are just some examples of the challenges victims face after a car accident.
Distracted driving is negligent driving. A personal injury claim against the distracted driver could result in compensation for damages, but it requires proving negligence.
Establishing all of the elements of negligence is not easy. Personal injury attorneys know these elements and what evidence helps prove them.
